Think about this situation: school just started, the girl or guy you had been IM-ing, texting and calling is so close now. You never had the chance to see her or him over the summer, but your heart races because she or he is right in front of you now. You spend more time with the person and then have "the talk."
Right away you know something is different, the air feels as though it has changed and that you can no longer breathe it. You really like this person and you have prayed so hard for someone and as a perfect answer to your prayers, there he or she is, right in front of you.
You start casually talking, but you know that a bomb is about to be dropped. You have never heard such things before, but as soon as you get to a Christian environment, you hear it every day. "God doesn't want me to date right now," or "I am looking for the one."
I am not saying that God wants you to go out with someone you know has bad intentions for you, but what about fellow believers?
I wish I could just say, okay, let the one be around the corner, singing "All You Need Is Love," eating an Air Head, and wearing a Beatles shirt. Could it happen? I am sure can happen, but that hasn't really been evident since the days of the Bible when Isaac was looking for the one and asked God, "May it be that the girl to whom I say, 'Please let down your jar so that I may drink,' and who answers, 'Drink, and I will water your camels also'--may she be the one whom You have appointed for Your servant Isaac." (Genesis 24:14)
The word fellowship appears 96 times in the NIV Bible. Who is to say that God does not want you to date; it is just a form of fellowship, right? It may not be the same type of date that you are thinking, but it is possible He does. As long as both of you have good intentions and both are together to glorify God, then will you not receive God's acceptance?
I will not lie, I feel alone. I read the stories of Paul in the Bible and wonder if he ever felt the same way at times even though he wrote about not worrying about marriage.
I must end with a note of caution. Before you use a God Card on why you are not going to date someone, please think it through and just be honest with the person. If you don't like the person, tell him or her. Please do not lie and say God doesn't want you to date until you find the right one. You are hurting so many when you do that; the person, possibly God, and possibly yourself. Do not put God in a box to get out of dating someone.
Be smart my fellow brothers and sisters and make sure you are truly, and I mean truly, doing what God wants and truly looking for the right one.
When you find the One True Love and put your hope in Him, He will guide your path and give you wings like eagles (Isaiah 40:31).
