On Saturday, Sept. 6, Younts Stadium was buzzing with an array of commotion. Coach's Low Country Brand and BI-LO sponsored the Second Annual North Greenville University tailgate celebration, the Low Country Boil.

At 4 p.m. the festivities began. Seabird, an up and coming Christian rock band, performed on an outdoor stage newly purchased by the University, so as to continue this tradition and hopefully implement more in the future.

North Greenville students were rather impressed by the musical talent of this not-yet-mainstream act.

"[I] got a T-shirt and listened to their CD five times through," said Tim Roberts, freshman broadcast media.

As with the tradition, Coach Joe's famous Low Country seasoning was used to make a low country boil filled with loads of shrimp, sausage and potato goodness. Several of the campus clubs joined the tailgating mayhem with supplemental stations of more food and fun.

Both the Campus Ambassadors and the Crusader cheerleaders were very involved in the activities. Cheerleader Meredith Limbaugh, junior print media, raved about her and her teammates delicious assortment of food from Zaxby's: chicken, baked beans, corn, cookies and more.

"It was like Thanksgiving dinner," Limbaugh said. "We were so spoiled!" Several inflatable slides and other bouncing and boxing contraptions were available for families with children and of course those few sophisticated seniors, who are still in denial about nearing entrance into the real world.

"Between the low country boil, free pork rinds, and the rockin' music - the tailgate was a blast," said Brian Darnell, sophomore music performance.

North Greenville students also competed in some inter-dorm challenges in hopes of obtaining points for the McCormick cup and crown. The three trials were a punt pass and catch, water balloon volleyball and attendance at the big game.

Unit A and Unit B won the girls punt pass and catch and water balloon volleyball respectively. The boys' dorms only participated in the attendance portion of the tri-game competition.

As the plethora of exciting events tapered off for the evening, the fans' eagerness escalated into an eruption of cheers and applause as the Crusaders exploded onto the field for their first home game of the fall 2008 season.
