Letter to the Editor: ¡ESPAÑOL DE FIESTA!
By: Spanish Department
Issue date: 4/23/08 Section: Opinion
During the year, the Spanish Club met 5 to 6 times each semester where the meetings included singing Spanish worship choruses (accompanied by guitarists Professor Jorge González and often Aaron Grant), an interview panel getting to know MKs and international Hispanic students at NGU, a speaker that shared about possible Hispanic ministries in the area, games, movies in Spanish, video watching of "First Semester Spanish Love Song," preparing and tasting Hispanic foods, and cultural presentations. Tertulias, during the week, were led by volunteer leaders and interested Spanish students had informal opportunities to chat and get to know one another using Spanish.
Some of the Spanish Club members, under Dr. Prieto's coordination, began the ministry of academic tutoring to some Hispanic children associated with the Betania Hispanic Baptist Church at Taylors Baptist. ¡Gracias! Samantha Rivera, Stephen Palacino, Jessica Blakewood, David Cobin, Cristina Delgado, Salem Ernie y Megan Rockefeller.
In speaking with one of the mothers, Sra. Lidia, she said, "I am so thankful for all the tutoring help the children have received. It has really made a difference in their schoolwork. The children think the tutoring should be forever! Another lady heard about me bringing my children up here to the university, and she's seriously thinking of bringing her children next year. Thank you so much!"
On Tuesday, April 8th, the last Spanish Club event of the academic year was held in Hayes Ministry Center. After having an interesting presentation about Venezuela by Rut and Raquel Soto, international students from there, those in attendance topped off the evening, making themselves either some chicken or beef taquitos or burritos. These were stuffed with any of the preferred toppings: refried or whole black beans, canned jalapeño peppers, shredded cabbage or lettuce, avocados, Cotija cheese and squeezed limes! ¡Delicioso!
David Hayes commented: "The Spanish food was very good, and the movies were a good idea. Having the opportunity to be somewhat immersed in Spanish was a little difficult, but for people that really want to learn the language, it was very enjoyable. I would highly recommend coming to the Spanish Club meetings.
Debbie Howard shared: "I loved it; I enjoyed it a lot; hearing the presentation of Venezuela all in Spanish was great; watching the movie gave me the chance to see how much I understood; the food was really good. I enjoyed it this semester even more than last semester. I would absolutely recommend coming to the Spanish Club; it takes some effort, and a little extra time, but it was well worth it!"
We want to publicly thank the officers for the Spanish Club that spent many extra hours planning, preparing, leading, buying the snacks, cooking, contributing to the success of the activities, and even cleaning up after each meeting! President: Samantha Rivera; Vice-President: David Cobin; Secretary: Jessica Blakewood; Treasurer: Stephen Palacino. ¡¡¡Buen trabajo!!! Thanks, too, to David Hayes for his spontaneous thoughtfulness and assistance!!
¡Gracias a todos por su participación! ¡Los esperamos para participar con nosotros el año que viene, 2008-2009! ¡Tengan un buen verano y practiquen su español! ¡Dios los bendiga!
