North Greenville University's theater department will present this semester's production, She Loves Me.
The cast and crew have been working to bring a new flare to Turner Chapel's stage.
She Loves Me, written by Joe Masteroff, is a romantic comedy with innocence, old-world elegance and nostalgia, yet as universal and relevant as ever in the age of Internet romances.
The story is set in Hungary in the 1930s. It is a story of two feuding clerks, Georg and Amalia, in a European perfume shop who find solace in their anonymous pen pals.
"The musical is pretty straight forward, entertaining, and funny," said Melody Pinion, senior theatre. "The underlying message is that relationships are the important thing, and we should cherish them and treat people with respect."
"It has heartbreak and hate, but in the end, it shows that loves conquers all," said Katy Beth Cassell, junior theatre. "I hope that the audience goes away feeling good about life as the world around us isn't in the greatest state currently."
Cassell is the assistant director for the production and will be directing "The Twelve-Pound Look" by J.M. Barrie as a part of the One Act Play Festival in February.
Corrie Eddleman is directing the performance. This is Eddleman's first year at North Greenville. She is also in charge of the university's Act 2 program.
"She has fit into the theatre department beautifully. It has been a blessing to work with such a dedicated, talented and creative actor/director," Cassell said.
Pinion will be playing the main character, Amalia, for her senior project.
"At first glance she is rough around the edges and has a slight arrogance about her. As you get to know her, she is very charming, romantic, and sincere. She has taught me not to label a person at first glance," Pinion said.
Lydia Campbell, senior theatre, will be playing Ilona Ritter for her senior project.
Kelly Weber, senior theatre, helped design the set, and Liz Floto, senior theatre, designed the costumes for their senior projects.
"It has been fulfilling watching the process that She Loves Me has gone through. Most of the actors in the production are not even theatre majors. But after watching a full run through last week, I have no doubt in my mind that opening night is going to be fabulous," Cassell said.
She Loves Me debuts today and goes through Friday.
