Amidst tears of joy, Melissa Snyder, senior psychology, received the crown to become Miss NGU 2008.
"I always told myself if I ever won a pageant that I wouldn't cry like all of these other girls. If you were there you know that I am indeed a crier," Snyder said.
The pageant, held in Turner Chapel, had 12 ladies competing for the crown and a couple hundred attended the event.
Emcee Chris Haines, career services coordinator, announced the new winners after a break to total the ladies' scores.
Along with the crown for the new Miss NGU, a number of scholarships and awards were awarded to other contestants for various accomplishments leading up to the crowning.
Fourth runner up Elizabeth Wood, freshman undecided, won a scholarship.
"I am very happy with being fourth runner up. I did not expect it, and it was quite a surprise," Wood said.
Third runner up Lauren Dorrity, sophomore undecided, won a scholarship also. Receiving scholarships too, Second and first runners up both competed last year and placed two spaces higher this year. Ashley Thibodeau, junior vocal performance, moved from fourth runner up last year to second runner up, and Heather Peele, sophomore marketing/voice performance, moved from third to first runner up.
"I was completely shocked to have won second runner up! After they called 3rd and 4th runner up, I thought for sure I was out of the running," Thibodeau said.
In addition to being first runner up, Peele won the Lifestyle and Fitness, Artistic Expression, Community Support Award, and Miss Photogenic.
Even as Peele displayed an excellent performance of an opera for her talent, many others performed beautifully as well.
While the majority of contestants utilized their vocal skills, three contestants performed a type of dance, two delivered a monologue, and one played a guitar to accompany her song. Snyder, one of the vocalists, did a stunning rendition of the Elvis Presley song "Black Velvet." Snyder also won the Interview award.

Not ugly: Wow! That's about the most shallow thing I have ever read. It is a real contest because to answer Terry's question it is a preliminary for the Miss South Carolina pageant and is judged by outside professionals. (Continued…)
