For a few guys at North Greenville, pick-up games and intramurals - while still fun and competitive - just do not do the sport of Ultimate Frisbee justice. Last year there was a group of Frisbee players who went to several tournaments and would take whoever was free to go, but this year things are getting a little more serious. The first North Greenville Ultimate club team was started at the beginning of this semester. Try-outs were held a few weeks ago and now the roster is set. They have proudly named themselves the North Greenville Ninja Geese.
Every member of the Ninja Geese is involved in the intramural Frisbee season this semester, but in the midst of the season games they have been practicing several times a week preparing for the 2008 season that will begin as soon as the spring semester rolls around. During the spring, the team will be on the road almost every other weekend representing North Greenville at tournaments across the Southeast.
However, the Ninja Geese aren't just waiting around for the spring. Several scrimmages have taken place already this semester, including games against the Greenville Disc Club and Furman. Last Thursday night the NG Ninja Geese and the Greenville Disc Club, which is made up of some of the top players in the Greenville area, scrimmaged two games. North Greenville lost the first game 13-7, but the second game is when the Ninja Geese stepped up and shutdown. At the very beginning of the second game, the Disc Club scored four consecutive points. North Greenville then shut down the Disc Club and took home the win after five unanswered points, leaving the final score at 5-4.
Last Saturday at 10 a.m., Furman came to North Greenville to scrimmage another two games. During the first game, the Ninja Geese hung tight with Furman and a few minutes after the second half began the game was tied at 6-6. Furman then proceeded to switch defensive strategies and got five quick turnovers to win by a final score of 11-6.
During the second game, North Greenville proceeded to shatter Furman's defensive strategy. A few minutes into the second half, Furman was up 8-5. The Ninja Geese then scored five unanswered points, and after a few turnovers the Geese won 12-10. This marks North Greenville's first win against Furman in Ultimate Frisbee; last year Furman won 11-0 in a tournament.
This weekend, while NGU is on fall break, the team will travel to the University of South Carolina to play in a two-day tournament against teams including USC, Georgia College and State and Georgia Tech. Several of the teams are ranked within the top 100 in the nation. A few wins this weekend could significantly move North Greenville up in the Ultimate Players Association rankings; they are currently ranked 331 out of 487 in the nation.
