Last week, North Greenville's Concert Choir completed its Spring Tour, which was a success to both the students and the instructors. The tour started Friday, March 23 where they sang at State Street Baptist Church in Cayce, S.C.

They then came back to campus Saturday morning for a choir retreat where they worked on tour music and also practiced other material. They then left Sunday morning at 5:30 in order to sing at First Baptist Church in Spartanburg where they sang at all three services.

From there the schedule was hectic, after singing in Spartanburg then they had to leave and sing at First Baptist Church in Abbeville that same night. From there they went across the state of South Carolina playing in churches in Moncks Corner, Kingstree and Seneca. They returned to North Greenville on Wednesday, March 28, weary but triumphant.

Choir Conductor, Dr. Barry Combs has been at NGU for nine years as the director of choral activities and church music program coordinator, believes that the choir tour was a success on two fronts. "It was a very successful Choir Tour, both from a musical point of view and from the point of representing North Greenville University to churches in South Carolina," said Combs.

The music the Concert Choir did not have a singular theme. They performed songs from many different musical time periods, performing music as diverse as the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th century eras. The choir was accompanied on piano by Fabio Parrini and also by several notable accompanists such as Kolby Matson, junior music composition; Rebecca Bonas, senior music performance; Mitchell Yaksh, freshman music performance; and Anna Steele, senior music performance.

Even though the choir tour was busy the students involved managed to have a lot of fun as well as experience the songs in a fresh new way.

"It was a good time of bonding with other choir members, laughing, singing and making memories. I feel like now we are a tighter and more closer-knit group than before," said Anna Ruffner, sophomore biology.

Jason Enos, senior music composition, brings out the spiritual side of the choir tour by saying, "Sometimes when we're on campus we sing the same songs over and over again, and I don't always absorb the spiritual aspects of the songs. There is something about Choir Tour though that brings out the spiritual qualities of a song where I couldn't see it before."
The Concert Choir is performing April 10 at the Gunter Theater, which is at the Peace Center in downtown Greenville. For more information contact the
