A tough fight was put on by the men's soccer team before they were defeated Saturday by Presbyterian College. Gabriel Altmayer, senior International business, scored on an assist by Bruno Contardo, freshman International business, leaving the game tied at half time. Presbyterian passed the Crusaders in the last minute of the second half winning the game 2-1.
This starts the men's soccer season with two losses and one tie. The crusaders scrimaged and stomped Tri-County Tech 6-1 at the start of the season and tied with Anderson 2-2 on Thursday, Aug. 24. They went on to lose to Southern Wesleyan University 3-1 on Tuesday, Aug. 29.
"We had a tactical mistake that we took too long to fix in the Tri-County Tech game," said Chris Hecke, junior theatre. "They did a good job of capitalizing on our mistake and even though we dominated the rest of the game, they had 8 to 9 players playing. We worked hard this week with understanding our new formation."
"In the SWU game, we had a let down for a few minutes and the other team scored a couple points in a row. Other than that we played very well and I'm excited about the rest of the season. If we can just play consistently the whole game, we will have a lot of opportunities this year," said Jessie McCormick, Assistant Coach for men's and women's soccer.
"Our team is very solid this year," said Max Duante, Freshman Marketing. "We have a very good offense and really talented players and it's just a matter of time before we get confidence playing as a team and be able to step in the field to perform as well as we know we can."
The women's soccer team was defeated in overtime by Palm Beach Atlantic Saturday. Danielle Duff, freshman sports management and Whitney Doublestein, senior sports management, scored in the first half leaving the score 2-1 in favor of North Greenville University before half time. Duff and Elizabeth Boone, senior biology, both scored in the second half but the Crusaders fell behind in overtime and lost the game with a close score of 5-4.
The Lady Crusaders have started the season with two losses, to PBA and a 1-5 loss to SWU on Tuesday, Aug. 29, but are not expecting the season to continue in this way.
"We had a great scrimmage earlier in the season," said McCormick. "The first game was a little rough and we definitely have a more talented team this year and are looking forward to a good season."
Out of the 32 shots that PBA shot at Jessica Binkley, freshman Elementary Education, only five points were scored.
"We have become a lot more organized as a unit. We are still getting used to each other and our positions but once we click I definitely think we'll contest in regional's and hopefully go on to nationals," said Tina Miller, sophomore, Business administration.
