Marla Davis tried her hand at becoming a country star when she performed in the Nashville Music Network 2006 Showcase.
"I wanted to do this competition because I thought it would be a good opportunity to get my name out there. Nashville is Music City, and what better way to get my voice heard than to sing in Nashville," said Marla Davis, junior English.

The competition ran from Aug. 25-27, and contestants, including Davis, performing on Sunday, Aug. 27 took the stage of the Gibson Showcase Theater, home to the production of the Gibson guitar. The 120 contestants from all over the United States and Canada were judged in five categories on vocal ability, charisma, appearance, audience response and marketability.

"We were looking up when the auditions were for Nashville Star, but it was too late to sign up, so another link led us to this competition," said Donna Davis, mother of Marla. "So it said to send in a demo, and I sent it in. I didn't even tell her about it."
Donna sent in a demo Davis had recorded when she was 16 years old, and a little over a month later, a letter came to congratulate Davis on making the finals.

"I was very excited, not only because I was getting to compete but also because I was getting to come to Nashville," said Davis.
Music City Explosion TV picked up the Nashville Music Network 2006 Showcase; so all performances were fed by satellite the local Tennessee station.

While waiting the weekend to perform for the Showcase, Davis found interest in another competition.
"We where shopping at the mall and we saw a sign-up table for a talent search and I thought it would be great practice for the showcase," said Davis.

Davis was one of 20 contestants in the RCC Western Stores 2006 TV Talent Search.

She performed "I Just Don't Love You," an original work written by an unknown artist for her demo, for both contests.
Davis didn't win either competition but received encouragement from judges and audience members alike.

"One man caught me on my way out of the auditorium and told me that he heard the people over the competition saying that I should record my song and pursue it as a single," said Davis.
Davis is also a full-time member of Joyful Sound, and recorded an acoustic pop CD entitled Thinking About You in 2004, which is available at Earshot Music.
