Are we living in the end times? Many Bible scholars and religious theologians seem to think so. All the signs seem to be lining up for the end of days, but is the world's time really almost over?
The NBC mini-series Revelations, which will begin airing tonight at 9 p.m., offers one depiction of how the world might end when Jesus returns.
Is Jesus already here? Is Gabriel positioned to blow the trumpet and proclaim Jesus's arrival? Possibly.
Revelations stars Bill Pullman as Harvard professor Dr. Richard Massey, and Natascha McElhone as Sister Josepha Montafiroe. Massey, a man who has spent his entire life trusting in science until his only daughter is brutally killed as part of a satanic ritual, teams up with Montafiroe in an attempt to stop what seems to be the end of days.
Chelsey and Brittney Coyle share the role of Olivia, a young girl in a coma who inexplicably spouts the book of Revelation in Latin.
Massey and Montafiroe attempt to save the young girl's life from the doctors who want to keep the phenomena quiet, and have the girl moved from the hospital to a safe place.
While in the hospital, an unchurched Olivia draws a picture of a donkey, the same donkey that Massey's dead daughter drew for him. In addition, the doctors attempt to play God while the girl is in the hospital. They want to harvest her organs, even though she is still experiencing brain functions. In an attempt to stop any more religious phenomena, as the girl's heart begins to fail, the doctors refuse to save her (remind you of Terri Schiavo?). The girl is dead for nearly a minute, and then, without help, her heart miraculously starts to beat again.
While this is going on in Miami, a baby is found in the middle of the ocean with no explanation of how it got there or how it survived. The infant becomes the center of attention as it is makes its way through the world, leaving a path of destruction in its wake.
Is this the Christ child, or is it the spawn of Satin? Is Olivia foreseeing the future of the end of the world? Will Massey find out if his daughter's killer is the Devil himself? You will have to tune in to NBC for the continuation and finally of the series.
Revelations is the closest depiction of the end of days since The Omega Code. I am glad that NBC is promoting this series. In a world filled with profanity and sexual misconduct, I am glad the network is promoting a series for religious viewers.
I cannot vouch for the final five hours of the series, but the first hour had me glued to my seat and anticipating the conclusion of the film. I recommend Christian viewers to see the series and support religious television shows as an attempt to let networks know that we want more of them.
